Introduction to Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca

Puerto Escondido is a charming, surf mad, coastal town located in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. Its name translates to “Hidden Port,” while no longer a secret, Puerto Escondido still maintains its small-town charm and authentic Mexican beach town atmosphere despite its growing popularity as Mexico’s best surf destination.

Where is Puerto Escondido

Puerto Escondido is located on the Pacific coast of Mexico, in the state of Oaxaca, south of Mexico City. It’s about a five-hour drive from Oaxaca City, the capital city of Oaxaca.

Puerto Escondido Airport receives daily flights from Mexico City which take about one hour as well as other destinations in Mexico. The airport makes it easily accessible by air and a great gateway to explore the stunning Oaxaca Coast including the laidback beach towns of Mazunte and Zipolite and even the resorts in Huatulco.

The town is also connected by bus to other Mexican cities including Oaxaca City. I’ll go into more detail about how to get here later on in this Puerto Escondido travel guide.

What is Puerto Escondido Famous for

While Puerto Escondido remains more off the beaten track as a tourist destination the town is most famous for surfing due to the legendary waves known as the Mexican Pipeline on Zicatela Beach. In recent years the surf mad town has also become popular with yogis, backpackers and digital nomads.

Besides surfing, there’s also a wide range of activities and experiences for all types of travelers with numerous beaches to enjoy and a vibrant local culture, cuisine and nightlife to explore. It’s also a great base for taking day trips to explore the nearby natural wonders. So there’s something for everyone to enjoy when visiting Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca.

Another thing that makes Puerto Escondido so special is that it is situated between two distinct ecosystems: the tropical beaches and lagoons of the Pacific Coast and the lush mountainous jungles of the Sierra Madre del Sur mountain range which makes it rich in natural beauty.

A Puerto Escondido vacation is a great choice if you want to explore Mexican culture and cuisine as well as enjoy the beautiful beaches and unique nature. It’s a lot less overdeveloped, touristy and crowded than famous Mexican beach resorts like Cancun so it has a much more authentic and laid back feel and is more affordable for budget travelers.

Where to Stay in Puerto Escondido – Best Beaches and Areas

As you can see there’s plenty of reasons to book your trip to Puerto Escondido today. But first it’s important to do a bit of research into the different beaches, neighbourhoods and areas to stay in Puerto Escondido so that you choose the best place to stay.

Even though Puerto Escondido is a small beach town it’s quite spread out and not really very walkable, it would take an hour to walk the 4 miles between Playa Carrizallio and La Punta. So choosing the right location where to stay in Puerto Escondido and the right accommodation is essential to make the most of your time here.

Puerto Escondido Map

Here’s a map to help you get acquainted with the area:

There’s several choices and each beach and area offers a wide range of accommodation options, from backpacker hostels and surf camps, to boutique resorts and yoga retreats, and everything in between, so whatever your budget and preferences you’ll find something to suit.

Refreshingly there’s not many huge luxury resorts or big chain hotels yet which adds to the authentic charm.

Here is a quick guide to the best beaches, neighborhoods and areas to stay in Puerto Escondido, as well as my top hotel recommendations for each budget category.

The Best Beaches in Puerto Escondido

Exploring the many stunning, sandy beaches is definitely one of the highlights of a trip to Puerto Escondido. Each has a unique charm and atmosphere, so make sure to allow time in your Puerto Escondido itinerary to visit at least a few, but for the best experience you’ll probably want to stay near your favorite beach.

Here are the top Puerto Escondido beaches and areas to stay in:

Playa Zicatela – For Epic Surf and Nightlife

Famous for its powerful waves, Zicatela Beach is home to one of the best surf spots in the world. The consistently huge (over 10 feet high!) world-class waves that come barrelling in from ‘the Mexican Pipeline’ are for experienced surfers only but are a spectacle to watch and international surfing competitions are held here.

While you can swim at other beaches in Puerto Escondido, Zicatela is not safe for swimming due to strong currents and huge waves. But the long, sandy beach is perfect for sunbathing and the sunsets are as epic as the waves. Watching the surfers conquer the waves and enjoying sunset and cocktails at the lively beach clubs is one of my favorite things to do in Puerto Escondido.

Best Places to Stay in Zicatela

Playa Zicatela is the best place to stay for experienced surfers and those looking for a lively atmosphere and lots of nightlife.

Zicatela offers numerous accommodations, beach clubs, bars, and beachfront restaurants and plenty of accommodation to suit all budget from surf hostels to more upmarket beach resorts.

Here’s my top picks for where to stay in Zicatela:

  • Luxury: Casa Joseph Zicatela – Stunning beachfront adults only 5 star resort with seaview rooms – some with private pools.
  • Mid-Range: Selina – Laidback friendly resort with a variety of rooms for all budgets just across the road from the beach. Perfect for digital nomads and solo travelers.
  • Budget: La Playita Beach House – Amazing value hotel with pool and shared kitchen just steps from the beach
  • Backpacker: One Love Hostal – Friendly backpacker hostel with dormitories, bungalows and yoga classes located in between Zicatela and La Punta

Playa La Punta – For Laidback Vibes

Located at the far southern end of Playa Zicatela, La Punta offers a more laid-back and bohemian atmosphere and smaller waves suitable for intermediate surfers making it a popular place for surf lessons.

There’s also some rustic beach bars with sun loungers making it a perfect spot for a relaxing day by the ocean. Just behind the beach the sandy lanes are full off boutique shops, cool cafes, vegan restaurants and a growing low key nightlife scene.

Sunsets are great here too and there’s more of a bohemian, community vibe with people playing volleyball and expats walking their dogs.

Best Places to Stay in La Punta

La Punta is the best place to stay in Puerto Escondido if you are looking for a slice of the laid back beach lifestyle. The sandy lanes, palm trees and abundance of smoothie bowls makes you feel like you could be on a tropical island and the waves are much more suitable for beginner surfers.

Offering a more laid-back vibe, La Punta is perfect for travelers seeking a quieter beach experience with easy access to laid back beach bars, surf breaks for beginners and intermediates.

  • Luxury: Casa Kuaa – Stunning new hotel with a great pool right on the beach.
  • Mid-Range: Casa de Olas Boutique Hotel – Beautiful boutique hotel with a pool and stunning terrace for yoga classes.
  • Budget: Bikini Beach House – Great value budget hotel in the heart of the action in La Punta.

Playa Carrizalillo – The Most Beautiful Beach

Nestled in a picturesque cove, Playa Carrizalillo is the most beautiful beach in Puerto Escondido and my personal favorite.

The calm turquoise waters make it an excellent spot for swimming and snorkelling. It’s also a good place for beginner surfers looking to learn how to surf.

Carrizalillo beach is not far from the main downtown area but is only accessible via a steep set of stairs which adds to it’s secluded charm. From above, this blissful bay of turquoise water and palm trees is a view I could happily gaze at for hours.

There’s a couple of laid-back palapas (thatched beach bars) where you can eat delicious fish tacos and sip refreshing mojitos. There are restaurants, bars and shops in the Rinconda area and the town is not far away.

Best Places to Stay near Playa Carrizalillo and Rinconda

The beaches in this area offer the calmest waters perfect for swimming and learning to surf and a more tranquil atmosphere with beautiful beaches. The sheltered bays of Playa Puerto Angelito and Playa Manzanillo and the small bay of Playa Coral are within walking distance.

The area just above Playa Carrizalillo is called Rinconda and it’s the best place to stay in Puerto Escondido for families and those looking for a peaceful vacation. Its close to the town and the airport and there are some shops and restaurants but not much nightlife in this area.

  • Luxury: Villas Carrizalillo – Luxury villas and suites with a pool, tropical gardens and spectacular views over Carrizalillo beach.
  • Mid-Range: Hotel Villa Mozart y Macondo – Lovely bungalows and suites nestled in tropical gardens with friendly hosts super close to the beach
  • Budget: Carri Surf Studio – Comfortable studios is a central location with a nice rooftop patio.

Playa Puerto Angelito and Playa Manzanillo – For Calm, Sheltered Bays

These two neighboring bays within walking distance from Playa Carrizalillo and the downtown area are perfect for families and those looking for a calm swimming spot. With shallow, clear water and a handful of beachside eateries Puerto Angelito beach and Manzanillo beach are the perfect places to relax.

Playa Bacocho – To Release Sea Turtles

Playa Bacocho is a wild and undeveloped beach located in the north end of Puerto Escondido town home to a turtle release center.

Here you can participate in rescuing sea turtle eggs or releasing baby sea turtles into the ocean for the ultimate feel good experience. Usually the sea turtle release happens at around sunset time.

The best resort in this area is Posada Real Puerto Escondido – a 4 star beach resort with all everything you could ever want including 2 outdoor swimming pools and private beach club. If you have a smaller budget Hotel Suites Villasol is a great choice.

The Bacocho neighborhood is a slightly away from the beach but a good area for digital nomads and expats looking to stay more long term.

Playa Principal – The Main Town Beach

No mention of Puerto Escondido beaches is complete without Playa Prinicpal. Located in the downtown Centro area of Puerto Escondido, Playa Principal is a popular spot for locals and fishermen and home to some local seafood restaurants.

While it’s close to the Centro, or downtown area, and all the amenities of town the the main beach isn’t the best or cleanest of the Puerto Escondido beaches for swimming as it is usually filled with fishing boats. But it is a good spot of people watching and for being in the middle of everything so it’s a good choice for long stayers and budget travellers.

Just behind Playa Principal is the main street or El Adoquín which is a long beachfront boardwalk where you’ll find plenty of shops, restaurants, bars, and nightlife and all the ATMs.

Best Places to Stay in Centro near Playa Prinicpal

There’s not any luxury resorts in the Centro area but it’s a good place to stay for digital nomads, budget travelers or longer stayers who want to be close to all the amenities of downtown.

Mid Range: Casa Losodeli – Sociable tropical resort with apartments, private rooms and dormitories complete with pool, tropical gardens and coworking

Budget: Colorada House – Great value private rooms and dorms around a beautiful tropical swimming pool area close to Centro.

Backpacker: El Coyote Hostel – Cheap air conditioned dormitory rooms in a popular and sociable backpacker hostel.

This is brief overview check out my full where to stay in Puerto Escondido guide for more.

Top Things to Do in Puerto Escondido

If you like your vacation to be a little more active than just beach hopping there’s plenty to do in Puerto Escondido and the surrounding area.

From surf lessons, boat trips and yoga classes to exploring the local culture, cuisine and nearby natural beauty spots, Puerto Escondido offers a plethora of things to do for all types of travelers. Here are some of the top things to do in Puerto Escondido:

Take a Surf Lesson

As Mexico’s top surf spot surfing is obviously one of the very best things to do in Puerto Escondido. While the world class waves at Zicatela beach are only suitable for experienced surfers there’s plenty of surf schools offering surfing lessons for beginners at Playa La Punta or Playa Carrizalillo.

You can find plenty of surf schools in Puerto Escondido with professional instructors that can cater to all levels. It’s a good idea to book your surf lessons online in advance in peak season to secure your spot.

If you’re serious about improving your skills and maybe tackling Zicatela one day consider joining a surf camp in Puerto Escondido where you’ll get to learn how to surf safely in a fun and sociable environment.

I spent some time with Oasis Surf School and the package was great value for money including accommodation, surf lessons and equipment, yoga classes and Spanish lessons. Trust me learning some Spanish is a great thing to do while in Mexico and will make your travels much easier and help you connect better with the locals. The surf house is located near Playa Carrizalillo and offers fully equipped apartments complete with a swimming pool, terrace and common area.

Swim in a Bioluminescent Lagoon

14km west of Puerto Escondido is the incredible Manialtepec Lagoon and one of the most magical and unique things to do in Puerto Escondido is to swim with bioluminescent plankton in the Manialtepec Lagoon.

The tiny, glowing organisms light up the water with an ethereal, glitter-like effect whenever they are disturbed. Swimming through the shimmering water feels like swimming in a sea of stars It’s such a magical, other-worldly experience.

You can experience this natural phenomenon on this night time boat tour. The best time to visit is during the new moon as it’s darker so easier to see the plankton. Witnessing the incredible natural phenomena of phosphorescent plankton is definitely an unforgettable experience.

You can also go on a bird watching and kayaking tour to explore more of the Manialtepec Lagoon.

Release a Baby Turtle

Puerto Escondido is an important nesting area for several species of sea turtles, including the endangered Olive Ridley turtle who lay their eggs in the sand of the unspoilt beaches. For the ultimate feel good activity you can participate in sea turtle conservation efforts helping to release baby turtles into the sea at Playa Bacocho.

The conservation organization runs the turtle release project where, every day at 5 pm, you can ensure a newly hatched sea turtle finds its way safely into the Pacific ocean giving them a better chance of survival. This is not only a fun and educational experience but also an incredible opportunity to contribute to the conservation of these amazing creatures and one of the very best things to do in Puerto Escondido.

You can make your own way to Bacocho beach at 5pm or take this tour to release turtles. If you are an animal lover it’s sure to be one of the highlights of your Puerto Escondido trip!

Go on a Boat Trip to Spot Dolphins or Whales

There’s plenty of opportunities to take a boat trip out to explore the ocean to go snorkelling, spot sea turtles, dolphins, and (depending on the season) whales or just enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Oaxaca coast.

The waters around Puerto Escondido are home to a variety of marine life, including dolphins, sea turtles, and migrating whales which makes it is a fantastic destination for wildlife enthusiasts. If you visit from November through April, you can embark on a whale watching tour to witness the majestic humpback whales as they travel through the area with their calves.

You can also join this dolphin watching boat trip any time of the year for the chance to see these playful creatures up close. Be sure to choose a responsible tour operator that follows ethical practices to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for both you and the animals.

Join a Yoga Class

Where there are surfers, yoga is not far behind! Surfing and yoga are a great combination and are often combined into one perfect retreat helping to build strength and flexibility and soothing sore muscles and so most surf camps also offer yoga classes as part of the package.

For daily drop in yoga classes try One Love Hostel near La Punta which hosts yoga classes on the terrace overlooking the ocean for a serene and blissful experience. Jardín Ganesha in Zicatela also offer excellent yoga and meditation sessions.

There’s also some great yoga retreats in Puerto Escondido, my favorite is Barbarenas. It’s located in a beautiful, sustainable and eco friendly resort near Zicatela beach with a swimming pool , tropical gardens and gorgeous cabanas and yoga shala with mesmerising views over the ocean. The yoga retreat package includes personalised yoga classes, meditation and pranayama sessions as well as delicious vegan food.

Afterwards you could also indulge in a rejuvenating massage, facial, or spa treatment at one of the town’s many spas and wellness centers and go for smoothie bowl or vegan tacos and make a wellness day out of it.

Try Oaxacan Food and Drink and Visit the Benito Juárez Market

Join the locals and experience the colors, smells and tastes of an authentic Mexican market by visiting Benito Juárez Market (also known as Mercado Principal.) Don’t miss the chance to taste some of Puerto Escondido’s delicious local dishes, such as tlayudas, mole, and fresh seafood.

You can take a food tour to sample the most authentic Oaxacan food in the best local restaurants or cooking class to learn more about the region’s rich culinary traditions and flavors.

And as you’re in Oaxaca don’t miss the chance to visit a Mezcal distillery just 15 minutes from Puerto Escondido where you can learn about and sample this classic Oaxacan tipple.

These are just a few suggestions for what to do in Puerto Escondido. Activities like fishing, horseback riding, visiting hot springs, zip-lining and more. Check out my full things to do in Puerto Escondido guide for the complete list.

FAQ’s and Travel Tips for Planning Your Trip to Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, Mexico

Here’s some essential travel tips for to help you plan and get the most of your visit to Puerto Escondido:

Best Time to Visit Puerto Escondido

The ideal time to visit Puerto Escondido is during the dry season, which runs from November to April.

During this period, you’ll enjoy warm temperatures, sunny days, and minimal rainfall. This is the best time to visit for beginner surfers but its also the peak tourist season and the best hotels get fully booked up so it’s a good idea to book in advance if you plan to visit during this time.

The months of May to October are considered the rainy season in Puerto Escondido, with a higher chance of tropical storms and hurricanes. The legendary waves get even bigger between May and August making it the best time to visit for experienced surfers looking for a challenge or those who want to watch the surf competitions.

November is also a great month to visit, as the town hosts the Fiestas de Noviembre, a month-long celebration featuring various events, including fishing tournaments, surfing competitions, and food festivals. You could also combine your visit with celebrating Dias Dos Muertos in Oaxaca City.

How to Get to Puerto Escondido

Getting to Puerto Escondido is easy thanks to the airport and bus services that connect it to Mexico City, Oaxaca City and the rest of the world. There’s several options for traveling to Puerto Escondido:

By Flight

Puerto Escondido may be a small town but it has an airport! Puerto Escondido Airport (PXM) is a great gateway to the Oaxaca Coast. There are cheap direct flights from Mexico City that take about 1 hour.

Mexico City Airport (MEX) has many international connections from all over the world so you can fly into Mexico and easily connect in Mexico City from an international flight to reach Puerto Escondido. This is definitely the quickest way to get to Puerto Escondido. Check Skyscanner to find the best deals.

Puerto Escondido airport also has direct flights to Guadalajara. Huatulco Airport (HUX) is about 100 km away and has direct flights to Canada.

You can also fly from Oaxaca City by taking a 30 minute scenic flight in a small plane. You’ll get great views over the mountains but this is the most expensive options and flights often get booked up way in advance. See prices, availability and book here.

By Bus from Oaxaca City

A popular route to get to Puerto Escondido is by bus from Oaxaca City but, if you suffer from motion sickness, be aware that this route does involve traveling along windy mountain roads.

The best and most comfortable route is to take the ADO or OCC bus which travels overnight and takes about 11 hours. It’s a popular route so you should book your bus online in advance.

Another option is to take a 7 hour mini bus from Oaxaca City to Pochutla. This is the quickest route but also the most windy although personally I didn’t find it too bad but then I don’t normally suffer from travel sickness. From Pochutla you can take a local bus, taxi or transfer to Puerto Escondido which will take 1 – 2 hours.

There are also ADO buses from Mexico City to Puerto Escondido but at 17 hours it’s a long journey and normally not much cheaper than taking a flight.

How to Get Around Puerto Escondido

Puerto Escondido is quite spread out so give some thought to where you want to base yourself and how you will get around the town. There’s a couple of options depending on your budget:

  • Taxis: Taxis are readily available and affordable for getting around town. Uber is not available in Puerto Escondido yet so you’ll have to hail a cab on the street or ask your hotel to call one. There are plenty of taxis and shared shuttles at the airport too.  A typical taxi ride within the town costs 30-35 pesos ($1.50-2) Most don’t have meters so agree on a price before setting off.
  • Public Transportation: Collectivos and camionetas are the primary forms of local public transportation, running from sunrise to around 8:30 PM and costing 8 pesos (less than $0.50) per ride. There are also buses connecting Puerto Escondido with the nearby towns like Pochutla but if you want to visit Mazunte and Zipolite you’ll have to get off half way and switch to a local collectivo.
  • Car or Motorbike Rental: Renting a car or motorbike is also a good option, especially if you want to have the freedom to explore the surrounding area and nearby attractions.

Is Puerto Escondido Safe?

Yes, Puerto Escondido is generally a safe destination, and one of the safest places in Mexico but it’s still wise to take precautions and stay aware of your surroundings. Here are some safety tips to keep in mind:

  • Avoid walking alone on the beach at night and stay in well-lit areas and avoid getting so drunk that you make yourself vulnerable.
  • Be cautious of the water, as strong currents and riptides can be dangerous. Always pay attention to lifeguard warnings and red flags on the beaches.
  • When traveling to or from Puerto Escondido, consider flying instead of taking overnight buses through Guerrero, a state known for its high crime rates.
  • Be discreet with your valuables, don’t leave your stuff unattended on the beach and don’t carry too much cash with you.

Puerto Escondido is much safer than other places in Mexico. By following these safety tips and using common sense, you’ll likely have no problems visiting Puerto Escondido even as a solo female traveller.

Can you Swim in Puerto Escondido?

Some beaches in Puerto Escondido like Zicatela are famous for surfing, the huge waves and strong currents mean they are not safe for swimming. However the sheltered shallow bays of Playa Carrizalillio, Playa Puerto Angelito and Playa Manzanillo are home to much calmer water and are safer for swimming, families and learning to surf.

My Guide to Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca: Mexico’s Nude Hippie Beach (2023)

You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to beaches in Oaxaca, but if you want to get an all over tan and feel the freedom that going au naturelle gives you then there’s only one choice – Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca – Mexico’s only official nudist beach!

Zipolite is a tiny, laid back, bohemian and blissfully rustic beach town. It’s fun, relaxed, open minded and very LGBTQ friendly. Playa Zipolite (or Zipolite Beach) attracts not only nudists and naturists but is also popular with hippies and backpackers as well as Mexican couples and even families.

My Playa Zipolite Travel Guide

Zipolite beach quickly became one of my favourite places in Mexico – I came for a few days and ended up staying a few weeks and I’m already dreaming of returning.

If you’re thinking of visiting here’s my guide to Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Mexico with all the info and tips you need to plan your trip to the only nudist beach in Mexico!

Where is Playa Zipolite

Playa Zipolite is the main beach in Zipolite, Oaxaca. A tiny, laid back beach town on the pacific coast in Oaxaca, Mexico. It was a popular hippie hang out in the 60s and 70s and hasn’t lost its bohemian vibes and is still the only legal nude beach in Mexico.

The nearest airports to Zipolite are at Puerto Escondido and Huatulco. You can get a bus or taxi from those airports or from Oaxaca City. I’ll go into more detail about the different options for getting to Zipolite later on in the post.

What to expect from the only nude beach in Mexico

Don’t worry if you’re not quite ready to leave your bathing suit at home! Even though Playa Zipolite is Mexico’s only legal nude beach, it’s clothing optional – it’s not obligatory to be naked!

When I visited, I’d say probably only a quarter of people were nude on Zipolite beach. You won’t see people wandering nude down the street normally, unless it’s around the time of the Festival Nudista Zipolite which is usually held in February. If you plan to come for the nudist festival book your accommodation well in advance because Zipolite is a small town and all the hotels sell out for this event.

While there are a handful of nudist hotels in Zipolite where it’s mandatory to be naked, most cafes and hotels do politely ask that you cover up with a sarong, towel or swimwear when eating or when off the beach.

Things to do in Zipolite

Zipolite is a tiny Mexican beach town, most famous for it’s clothing optional beach, and you could probably walk around the whole place in less than 1 hour so there’s not that many things to do in Zipolite – in fact, it prides itself on being the perfect place to do nothing – and wear nothing!

It’s a super relaxed and friendly place where the best thing to do is relax on the beach, swim, surf, eat fish tacos, drink mojitos, watch the sunset and make new friends.

Playa Zipolite is a lovely long stretch of sand with crashing azure waters. The Oaxaca Coast is a great place for surfing but swimmers should be aware of the strong pacific coast currents.

One of the things I love about Zipolite beach is that the development here is mainly low key, rustic and laidback but there are still plenty of beach bars, cafes and palalpas lining the beachfront to keep you feed and watered.

Zipolite also has a few places offering yoga classes, ecstatic dance and alternative healing workshops. Check out La Loma Linda, Camp Zipolite and El Alquimista to see whats on. Mazunte, another tiny beach town only 5 kms away is one of Mexico’s yoga hotspots with numerous yoga offerings.

Climb over the rocks at the far southern end of Playa Zipolite and you’ll find Playa Amor, a hidden cove and nude beach with a basic beach bar that is a popular hangout for nudists and the LGBTQ community. On Playa Amor you’ll find that most people are naked unlike Playa Zipolite which is more clothing optional.

Restaurants and Nightlife in Zipolite

Most of the restaurants and nightlife in Zipolite is centered around the main street, Colonia Roca Blanca, also known as “el Adoquin.”

This is where you’ll find many hotels and guest houses, restaurants and small shops all within easy walking distance. There’s a small artisan market along the main street in the evening and some cool street art to discover.

There’s also some decent beach front cafes serving tasty food on Playa Zipolite. One of my favourite beachside restaurants was Sal y Pimienta for great value massive burgers and fish tacos right on the beach.

The beach front restaurant at the lovely Pousada Mexico where I stayed also served great Mexican and Italian food. I loved the breakfasts at Le Castelet and I also ate alot in Entropia.

For something different, Mao Mau serves great Thai, sushi and Asian food and the beautiful Restaurante El Alquimista would be my top recommendation for a romantic dinner.

The beachfront bars often have 2 for 1 cocktail offers at sunset and play music, there are some low key parties in the beach shacks happening most nights and even a drag show. There’s also an art house cinema in the town which also hosts events.

Where to Stay in Zipolite – The Best Zipolite Hotels

Zipolite is also a small town with most accommodation in Zipolite being located around the main street, Roca Blanca, or around the area near Playa Amor.

There’s a good selection of accommodation, from budget hotels and hostels, mid range hotels and also some beautiful boutique resorts tucked away around Palay Camaron at the North end of Zipolite Beach. Refreshingly, there are no huge luxury chain resorts in Zipolite yet!

Here’s my pick of the best places to stay in Zipolite:

Naked Hotel Zipolite

This famous adults only hotel is a beautiful beachfront property with stylishly rustic yet super comfortable rooms with AC and balconies to soak up the amazing ocean views. There’s a small swimming pool, a great beach bar and restaurant and plenty of quirky, Instagrammable features. Despite the name, it’s not obligatory to be naked at the Naked Hotel and actually I never saw anyone naked there! Click here to check prices.

El Alquimista

A beautiful boutique hotel with a spa, daily yoga classes and an adults only swimming pool. The stylish rooms have terraces, some with a sea view, and it’s also home to one of the best restaurants in Zipolite. It’s close to Hotel Noga which is another good choice tucked away in the jungle and mangroves. Click here to check prices.

Villa Aikia

Beautiful adults only suites with incredible views over the Playa Camaron from the infinity pool, yoga shala and hot tubs. Clothing is optional apart from in the lobby and restaurant areas. Click here to check prices.

For more clothing optional hotels in Zipolite check out Heven Zipolite and Casa Sol Zipolite. Both are stunning adults only luxury boutique resorts overlooking Camaron Beach.

Casa Nudista – LGBT Hotel

For the full Playa Zipolite nude experience, Casa Nudista is a super conveniently and centrally located budget and LGBT friendly nudist hotel with both private rooms and dormitories. This is one of the only Zipolite hotels that is 100% nudist where nudism is obligatory! No clothes allowed! There’s also a swimming pool, nudist events and live music nights. Click here to check prices.

Posada Mexico

This gorgeous collection of arty, rustic chic huts in a tropical garden paradise right on the beachfront is budget friendly mid range pick. Rooms are great value and the staff are lovely. There’s also a restaurant right on the beach serving good Mexican and Italian cuisine.Click here to check prices.

If Posada Mexico is full, Hotel Estrella De Mar and Hotel Buda Mar are also good beachfront choices.

Budget Beach Huts

For those on a budget, there are also some basic beach huts on Playa Zipolite beachfront but you can’t book these online. I enquired about the price but can’t remember now how much they were – sorry!

All I remember is that they were more expensive than Hostal Teresa whose rates start at $28 and is the cheapest Zipolite hotel you can book online. These beach huts were pretty basic and had less facilities than Hostal Teresa, but then you do wake up right on the beach! You can also pitch a tent under the shade there for a small fee.

The cheapest mid range hotel with AC is Hotel Zipolite, which also has a swimming pool and a super central location right on the beach and in the middle of the main street.

More Beaches near Playa Zipolite

This part of the Oaxaca Coast has many beautiful beaches that you could explore from Playa Zipolite. The best way to explore would be with a rental car or motorbike but you could also take the collectivos or a tour.

Some of the beach beaches near Zipolite to check out include:

Mazunte – Visit the Turtle sanctuary, check out the street art, take a yoga class and trek to Punta Cometa at sunset.

San Agustinillo – The smallest and most peaceful beach, in between Mazunte and Zipolite.

Puerto Angel – A small fishing village and port if you want to see more local side to Mexican beach life

Huatulco – There’s also many beautiful bays and beaches around Huatulco with great snorkelling and boat trips. It’s a more upmarket area with plenty of 5 star and all inclusive luxury resorts.

Puerto Escondido – Experience the best surfing in Mexico and vibrant nightlife at Zicatela Beach, release a baby turtle and see the bioluminescence on a night tour of the nearby lagoon.

Best Time to Visit Zipolite

The weather in Zipolite is warm throughout the year, the average high temperatures range from 86-95F, with average lows from 76-80F and the water temperature averages between 80-85 degrees. The driest months are from November to April and from June to September, the region experiences the most rainfall.

The ideal time to plan a trip to Zipolite is between November and April. The high season for tourism in Zipolite is from December to April, with peak periods around Christmas/New Year’s and Semana Santa, the holy week leading up to Easter.

Zipolite hosts several events throughout the year that you might want to consider when choosing your dates. The Zipolite Nudist Festival, or Festival Nudista, takes place in late January/February, and the Mazunte Jazz Festival is typically held in the second week of November.

If you are combining your trip to Zipolite with visiting Oaxaca City then you might want to time your trip to coincide with The Dia de los Muertos festival, or Day of the Dead, which is celebrated in Oaxaca from October 31 to November 1, and it is one of the most spectacular events in Mexico.

It is advisable to book your flights and accommodation early, especially if you plan to visit during these times.

How to Get to Zipolite

The quickest way to get to Zipolite is to fly into either Puerto Escondido airport or Huatulco airport.

Huatulco Airport (HUX) is 40 km away and a taxi ride will take about 40 minutes. Huatulco has direct flights to Canada. Check Skyscanner to find the best deals.

Puerto Escondido airport (PXM) is 73 km away and a taxi ride takes about 1.5 hours. There are direct budget flights from Mexico City that take about 1 hour.

How to get to Zipolite from Puerto Escondido

Zipolite is about 1 hour from Puerto Escondido although getting there can be a little tricky. I took the Transportes Delfines bus that leaves from across the road from the Chedraui supermarket heading to Pochutla and Huatulco.

I had to get off at Crucero de San Antonio and took the collectivo heading to Mazunte and Zipolite. It took about 1 and a half hours and cost 50 MXN for the bus and 20 MXN for the collectivo.

The easiest and most convenient way to get there is to book a transfer that will take you straight there from your hotel.

How to get to Zipolite from Oaxaca

There are a couple of options for getting to Zipolite from Oaxaca City and vice versa. The quickest and most expensive is to take a 30 minute scenic small plane flight to Puerto Escondido and then a 1 hour taxi from there. The flight offers fantastic views but is expensive and gets booked up way in advance. Check prices and availability here.

So most people take the bus. There are two options – If you suffer from motion sickness I recommending going for the longer, less windy route with the bigger and more comfortable ADO bus to Puerto Escondido and then take a taxi, transfer or local bus from there to Zipolite. The bus travels overnight and takes about 11 hours. It’s a popular route so you should book your bus online in advance.

If you’re OK with windy roads then head to Potchula and hop on one of the mini buses which takes the most direct, but also most windy route, to Oaxaca. It’s the cheapest and quickest option at only 7 hours and I didn’t find it that bad, but then I don’t normally get travel sick.

Make life easier by booking this combined transfer and bus ticket which will pick up you in Zipolite and take you to Pochutla and get you on the Lineas Unidas minibus to Oaxaca.

How to get from Mazunte to Zipolite

Mazunte and Zipolite are just 3.5 miles apart and a 20 minute taxi or collectivos/pasajeros (shared pick up trucks with benches and a kind of tent covering) run between them for about 10 MXN and also stop at San Agustinillo. You could also rent a motorbike to explore the area.

Final Thoughts on Zipolite

As you can see Zipolite is a unique place to relax and let it all hang out! It’s probably my favorite beach town in Mexico so far.

I hope this guide to Zipolite has helped you plan your own trip and that you fall in love with this unique beach town as much as I did!

Has it been your lifelong dream to visit the USA, and you’re finally ready to make it happen yet are unsure where to start with planning your trip?

I get it! I felt that way too. The USA is not just huge; it also boosts incredibly diverse landscapes and numerous vibrant cities, each with a unique character. So choosing the best places to visit in the US is no easy task.

Still, to help you plan an epic American vacation, I’ve narrowed it down to the top 14 bucket list US destinations and the must-visit tourist attractions you’ll find at each one.

The 14 Best Places To Visit In The US

In these top places to go in the US, I’ve included something for everyone, from mesmerizing national parks to exciting cities to iconic landmarks.

  1. New York City
  2. Las Vegas
  3. San Francisco
  4. Los Angeles
  5. Hawaii
  6. San Diego
  7. Florida
  8. New Orleans
  9. Yellowstone
  10. Utah’s National Parks
  11. Rocky Mountain Ranges
  12. Chicago
  13. Washington DC
  14. Alaska

New York City

New York City, or NYC, is often at the top of most people’s USA bucket lists, thanks to being featured in so many Hollywood movies and international TV shows. New York is famed for its iconic bustling atmosphere, designer shopping, and Broadway performances which make it one of the best places to visit in America.

The Big Apple, as the city is also known, is also home to many of the USA’s most famous tourist attractions, like the Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, Metropolitan Museum, and Central Park.

There’s so much to see in this city that you need at least 4 days in New York City to see the highlights. You can even visit Niagara Falls on a day trip from NYC allowing you to tick off two iconic USA sights off your bucket list at once.

Las Vegas, Nevada

Another of the most famous places to visit in the USA is gambling haven Las Vegas in Nevada.

While it is known for its 24/7 entertainment and eclectic vibe, Vegas is for more than just avid gamblers. The city of Sins is also famed for its shopping, fine dining, and nightlife scene, most of which you can find on the iconic strip in the city center.

If the Vegas crowds get a bit much, drive a few hours across the border to California to check out Death Valley national park, which is said to be the hottest place on earth in the summer. Unless you like the sensation of being in a sauna 24/7, the best time to visit Death Valley is in spring, when the usually bone-dry desert boasts an impressive floral display.

Alternatively, you can take a four-hour drive to the Grand Canyon national park in Arizona, famed for its distinct huge red rocks with multiple layered bands formed over millions of years. Whether you’re interested in natural history or hiking and biking trails, add this epic national park to your USA bucket list.

San Francisco, California

San Francisco is a charming city with gorgeous scenery, diverse cultural events, and bustling music festivals. The Golden Gate Bridge and iconic trams are the most popular tourist attractions here. However, there are also many incredible coastal hiking trails in and around the city, boasting breathtaking views of the pacific ocean.

San Francisco is also the closest large city to Yosemite national park, known for its refreshing waterfalls, waterfalls, deep valleys, and ancient Sequoia forest park.

Los Angeles, California

Los Angeles, the glamorous city of dreams and home of Hollywood is high up on most people’s bucket lists. L.A. is a sprawling metropolis on the Californian coast that dazzles with it’s sunshine, cinematic history and endless possibilities.

Los Angeles boasts sunny beaches, iconic landmarks, and star-studded allure. Walk the legendary Hollywood Walk of Fame and immerse yourself in the magic theme parks like Universal Studios Hollywood and Disney Land.

For a taste of glamour, shop on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, known for its luxurious boutiques. And of course, soak up the sun on the beautiful beaches of Santa Monica and Malibu and walk the boardwalk on vibrant Venice Beach.

Hawaii

No mention of the best vacation destinations in the US would be complete without the islands of Hawaii! Situated in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, Hawaii is a tropical archipelago that offers a stunning natural beauty and warm hospitality. While there are over 100 hundreds, Kauai, Oahu, Maui, and the Big Island are the most popular for tourists.

Hawaii’s stunning beaches are some of the best in the world, perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and surfing and there’s many surf and yoga retreats in Hawaii where you can learn. From the iconic Waikiki Beach in Oahu to the Napali Coast in Kauai, Hawaii is a haven of unparalleled beauty and adventure.

Explore the lush rainforests and cascading waterfalls, embark on exhilarating hikes and be rewarded with jaw-dropping vistas, and witness the powerful volcanic activity at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Also don’t miss the cultural experiences, such as attending a traditional luau, learning hula dancing, or tasting delicious local cuisine. Aloha!

San Diego, California

Another California city that should be on everyone’s USA bucket list is San Diego. With sunny weather, laid-back and stunning beaches it’s home to some of the best surf and yoga retreats in California. There are also many fab cultural venues like San Diego maritime museum and the natural history museum.

From San Diego, you can also take a day trip to Joshua Tree national park, which is less than a 3-hour drive one way. The unique and vast Mojave desert encompasses 790,000 acres of land and is home to a wide selection of exotic plants, wildlife, and epic hiking trails. San Diego is also really close to the border with Mexico.

Florida

If you love theme parks, beaches, and endless entertainment options, you will surely want to spend some time in Florida. Full of tourist resort towns, it’s hard to pick just one part of Florida to visit, so why not see them all?

In the south, Miami Beach (also called south beach), Key West and the tropical wetlands, known as the Everglades, are some of the most best US destinations and yoga retreats in Florida are also popular.

Orlando is also famed for being the home of theme parks including the Walt Disney World Resort, but there are other notable attractions here, like the Kennedy Space Center.

New Orleans, Louisiana

The city of New Orleans is a vibrant, melting pot nestled on the banks of the Mississippi River. With French, African, and Spanish influences, New Orleans is often considered a cultural gem of the Deep South, showcasing its vibrant music, cuisine, and traditions.

Known as the birthplace of jazz, New Orleans pulsates with a rhythmic energy that permeates every corner. From the soul-stirring sounds of street performers to the tantalizing aroma of gumbo wafting through the air, New Orleans’ unique blend of history, music, charm and hospitality has made it one of the most popular US destinations.

Visit St. Louis Cathedral and explore the elegant architecture of the Garden District and the French Quarter, with its vibrant music scene and delectable Creole cuisine. Try to time to your visit to coincide with the iconic Mardi Gras festivities, where the city explodes with vibrant colors and lively parades.

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

Yellowstone national park in Wyoming is home to nearly half of the world’s active geysers. It is famous for its geothermal features, such as Old Faithful and colorful hot springs. If you’re interested in Hydrothermal and Geologic activity, this is a must-visit USA destination.

Aside from the geysers, you’ll find dramatic canyons, fresh alpine rivers, lush green forests, and plenty of wildlife like grizzly bears, wolves, and herds of bison. If one park is not enough, you’ll find the lovely Grand Teton national park just a short drive south of Yellowstone.

Utah’s National Parks

Utah may not be the state that first comes to mind when you think about the best places to visit in the US, but if you’re seeking the most beautiful national parks, this is the state for you. Utah is home to 5 incredible and unique national parks – Arches, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, Bryce Canyon and Zion!

In the southwest corner of the state, you’ll find Zion national park, a hiker’s paradise with a maze of sandstone canyons and colourful waterfalls. A 90 minute drive north east and you will come across Bryce Canyon national park, which has various beautiful sunset and sunrise viewing points.

Iconic Monument Valley, on the border of Utah and Arizona, is also not far away and it worth the detour. Then head north to visit Capitol Reef and Canyonlands national park for dramatic desert landscapes before checking out the soaring pinnacles, arches and massive rock fin in Utah Arches National Park.

Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado

Speaking of amazing natural scenery, another one of the best US destinations is Rocky Mountain national park. A 415 square-mile protected area of the Rocky Mountains, offering many hiking and mountain biking trails and plenty of wildlife sightings.

Located in Colorado, you can combine this natural wonder with skiing in Aspen, a city break in Denver or Boulder or enjoy the hot springs in Colorado Springs.

Chicago, Illinois

Chicago, the third largest city in the USA, is known as the “windy city” as ice-cold breezes blow off Lake Michigan and sweep through the city’s streets. However, don’t let the weather put you off from visiting, as there are many historic landmarks to explore here, such as the Art Institute of Chicago and Millennium Park.

Moreover, Chicago is nicknamed the music city because of its rich heritage in various genres like house and gospel, urban blues, and modern jazz. As a result, live music is always plentiful here.

The Capitol – Washington DC

It may not seem like the most glamorous and exciting US city, but if you’re traveling the east coast, stop off for a few days in Washington, DC. It’s about 4 hours drive south from New York City.

As the federal capital city and one of the most important cities in the US, you’ll find many neoclassical monuments like the famous White House and Lincoln Memorial. Also, be sure to check out the obelisk-shaped Washington Monument and the Kennedy Center of performing arts.

Alaska

Last but certainly not least, one of the most unique experiences in the US is exploring the untamed wilderness of Alaska. Located in the far north of the United States, Alaska is a land of vast landscapes, towering mountains, icy glaciers and endless adventure.

From the mesmerizing Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) to grizzly bears and majestic humpback whales, Alaska offers a true adventure into the wild. Experience the awe-inspiring majesty of Denali, the tallest peak in North America, and venture into the rugged terrain of Wrangell-St. Elias National Park.

One of the best ways to experience Alaska is by cruising through the icy waters of Glacier Bay National Park, where tidewater glaciers and abundant marine life create a mesmerizing and unique spectacle.

Final Thoughts on the Best Places to Visit in the USA

While this is in no way an complete list of all the amazing places to visit in the USA, by now I’m sure you have many awesome cities on your USA bucket list.

The US is a huge country so I don’t recommend trying to see it all in one trip. It’s best to plan a trip that includes several US destinations located nearby, or in neighboring states.

If you don’t have time for a whole Route 66 road trip, a popular California itinerary is a road trip from L.A to San Francisco and then to Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon. This route allows you to check off some of the most iconic sights in the US in one epic trip!

And if you’re anything like me and you like to combine a trip of a lifetime with a yoga retreat check out my pick of the best yoga retreats in the USA.

Whichever you choose for your USA trip, it’s bound to be an unforgettable experience. Check this post about things you need to know before visiting the USA for practical tips on visas etc.

6 Incredible Reasons To Attend The Bali Spirit Festival 2023

Come to the tropical island of Bali in May to experience one of the top five transformational festivals in the world!

There’s no better way to deepen your yoga practice and awaken your spiritual being than with the immersive experience of attending a yoga festival.

One of the most life changing events I’ve attended is the Bali Spirit Festival, held in the deeply spiritual destination of Ubud, Bali.

If you’ve not yet heard about the Bali Spirit Festival, you’re missing out!

But fear not, as I’m here with the scoop about this immense yoga event and why you should book your flights to Bali this May!

Pin this!

What Is The Bali Spirit Festival?

The Bali Spirit Festival has been activating people’s hearts since 2008, with the goal of creating a global community gathering of different cultures sharing their practices and teachings for personal and collective well-being.

The festival is held in Ubud on the blissful and spiritual island of Bali, Indonesia known as the island of the Godsfor it’s many temples and deeply spiritual culture. Yoga in Bali has become very popular and the island is now a MAJOR yoga hotspot and spirituality hub.

This year, the festival runs from May 4th to 7th 2023 with an impressive line-up of international teachers, speakers, and performers, who share the same mission – to promote social change and world peace.

6 Reasons Why You Should Attend Bali Spirit Festival

So Many Amazing Workshops and Events

The Bali Spirit Festival’s schedule is diverse and comprehensive offering incredible workshops, music, and community events. There’s something for everyone, you only need a desire for personal or spiritual growth to gain massive value from this epic event.

The workshops are divided into three categories:

  • Yoga, meditation, dance and martial arts,
  • Sound healing and breathwork,
  • Dharma talks, seminar, and speakeasies.

The yoga classes cover over 10 different styles, so you’ll get to practise your favourite and discover some styles you’ve never tried before.

A massive part of the festival is music. It showcases a vast array of spiritually-inspired artists that help to make the experience more soulful and intimate.

There is also a large community area with a marketplace featuring Bali’s finest restaurants and vendors, a community pavilion with daily classes, and healing huts where you can book private sessions with healers and readers.

Learn more about the festival’s offerings on the Bali Spirit Festival website.

Gain Numerous Insights and Breakthroughs

Immersive spiritual experiences are always incredibly transformative, so expect to leave this yoga festival as a different (but better) person.

Sometimes all we need to gain clarity, break old habits and let go of self-sabotaging behaviours is a supportive, inspiring, and empowering environment that pushes us out of our comfort zone.

At the Bali Spirit Festival you’ll get inspired by the incredible speakers, learn new practices to support and boost your personal growth, and partake in life-changing discussions more powerful (and cheaper) than your therapy sessions.

So, if you’re looking to feel more connected to the universe, and step into a more purposeful life, attending the Bali Spirit Festival is an absolute must!

Meet Tons of Like-Minded People

If you struggle to meet people who are on your ‘wavelength’ and share your passion for spiritual growth, you won’t have to worry about this at the Bali Spirit Festival.

Whether you’re a yogi, energy healer, tantra practitioner, dancer, singer, martial artist, or anything else, you will find your tribe here.

The festival’s structure makes meeting like-minded people and beginning conversations effortless. The workshops are interactive and there are many social areas.

As the festival evokes such an intimate, inter-connected experience, you won’t have any superficial conversations or small talk here. I quickly formed close bonds with my workshop buddies and came away with a handful of new friends.

Learn About Different Cultures

Not only will you learn about the beautiful Balinese culture, the teachers and speakers at Bali Spirit Festival are from diverse backgrounds, sharing traditions and practices from around the globe.

Choose from workshops including local Javanese meditation, Afro-Brazilian Capoeira, devotional mantras and qi-gong. Or relax and enjoy dance performances from all over the globe, from Balinese to Indian and West African.

Contribute Towards a Good Cause

Another thing I love about the Bali Spirit Festival is that their passion and commitment to giving back and making the world a better place.

They have various Karma (Giving Back) outreach initiatives, including many partner organisations in Bali and worldwide. These include children’s programs, multicultural education & performances, health clinics, HIV & AIDS awareness and environmental protection.

Since 2010, Bali Spirit Festival has raised over $200,000 for these causes so you know the hard-earned cash you use to buy a ticket will go to multiple good purposes.

Enjoy the Tropical Paradise Island of Bali

This year’s Bali Spirit Festival will be held in the world-famous Yoga Barn in Ubud, surrounded by blissful nature and good vibes only a 10 minute walk from the sacred Monkey Forest.

Ubud is Bali’s yoga and spiritual centre, known for its beautiful temples and holy springs, lush rice terraces, yoga studios and vegan cafes. Ubud has a long history of healing and became world-famous thanks to its appearance in the book and movie ‘Eat Pray Love,’ which inspired modern-day spiritual seekers to visit on their own self-discovery quest.

Ubud is an easy 45-minute taxi ride from Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport and there are many beautiful and affordable places to stay nearby like the Ubud Aura Retreat nearby the festival venue. The Puri Padi Hotel will be hosting some festival events and the luxury Alaya Resort is just next door. (See an indepth guide to where to stay in Ubud here)

Where to Stay in Lisbon: Best Areas for First Time Visitors

Lisbon, or Lisboa to the locals, is one of Europe’s most distinctive, charming, historic and colourful cities.

Old yellow trams rattle and screech up and down along the winding cobbled streets, terracotta rooftops sprawl across the hillsides, while azulejo (tile) covered and pastel coloured buildings part to reveal glimpses of the shimmering Tagus River (Rio Tejo).

It’s hard not to fall in love with Lisbon, but with so many different historical districts to choose from, it’s difficult to decide where to stay in Lisbon, especially if it’s your first time visiting.

Choosing where to stay in Lisbon is one of the most important decisions to make when planning your trip to Lisbon as your choice of neighbourhood and accommodation can make or break your trip. So you need to do some research into the different areas of Lisbon to make sure you get the most out of your visit.

As the capital of Portugal, Lisbon is packed full of historical and cultural treasures and consists of many different neighbourhoods, areas and districts, all with a different atmosphere. Each Lisbon neighbourhood presents travellers with amazing architectural delights, interesting historic landmarks and range of accommodation for all budgets.

To help you plan your Lisbon trip this blog post will give you a mini Lisbon travel guide with an outline of the best areas, neighbourhoods, hotels and best places to stay in Lisbon for first timers.

I’ll also include the essential Lisbon travel tips you’ll need including how many days to spend in Lisbon, the best time to visit and how to get to Lisbon and get around..

Lisbon is one of my favourite cities in Europe so I hope you find this blog post useful and that you love your time in this fascinating city as much as I did!

Where to Stay in Lisbon for First Time Visitors

Choosing where to stay in Lisbon is the first step when planning your trip. There’s a good range of accommodation to suit all budgets including luxury, heritage and boutique hotels to modern spacious apartments, budget hotels and hostels. But first you need to decide on the location. While central Lisbon is very accessible and walkable, there are different atmospheres in each district and no two are the same.

To help you tailor a trip that’s right for you, here’s a summary of the best areas to stay in Lisbon and my quick picks of the best places to stay in Lisbon depending on your reason for visiting, whether it’s your first time, a romantic couples trip, family holiday or a trip with friends to experience Lisbon’s nightlife. Then I’ll go into more detail about each area and give hotel recommendations for each neighbourhood.

The Best Areas to Stay in Lisbon for First Time Visitors

The city of Lisbon is set out in a semicircle, spreading outwards from the millennia-old historic central districts towards the newer, more modern neighbourhoods. Lisbon is separated from southern Portugal by the Tagus River, which feeds into the Atlantic Ocean, and is encircled by the A36 highway.

Lisbon is comprised of dozens of neighbourhoods, with many popular districts located within the central area and surrounding the Avenida da Liberdade. Lisbon’s downtown area includes Baixa, Cais do Sodré, Bairro Alto, Rossio, Principe Real and Alfama, with Alfama being the oldest district in the capital. Outside of the A36, you can also find some historic areas of interest, such as the Belém district.

If you want to take advantage of the warm Portuguese climate and stay near the beach while still being able to visit all the attractions of Lisbon then staying along the coastlines of Cascais and Estoril is a great option. The two towns to the east of Lisbon are famous for their sandy Atlantic beaches.

Anyone needing to stay near Lisbon Airport should book a room in the Bairro do Oriente district, which is in close proximity to the airport, offers easy access to the centre of Lisbon, and also has a fabulous marina.

This historic district in Lisbon was once the meeting spot for artists and intellectuals. This comes as no surprise when you arrive in Chiado and see the many ornate galleries and museums dotted along the main avenue ‘Rue Garrett’. Colourful boutiques, from upscale international brands to the world’s oldest bookshop, are scattered around the hilly district.

Even the streets themselves draw you in, with ornate mosaic patterns decorating the sunny squares. Theatre lovers can enjoy a traditional show at the National São Carlos or Trinidade Theatres. Chiado also boasts some incredible architecture, the best of which can be seen at the Basílica dos Mártires and the interior of the Loreto Church.

There’s plenty to explore within walking distance and the Baixa-Chiado metro station offers easy access to the rest of the city. The Avenida da Liberdade started as an 18th-century park but has since become a fashionable boulevard lined with luxury shops and hotels. The wide pedestrian garden, that sits in the middle of the avenue, is lush and green and decorated with statues and even a waterfall.

One end of the Avenida da Liberdade opens into the Rossio district and the other transforms into the Parque Eduardo VII via the Marquês de Pombal square and roundabout which features a monument to the eponymous Marquis who rebuilt Lisbon after the devasting earthquake.

This roundabout also serves as the meeting point for several main boulevards that run through the city and offers a metro station and public transport connections across the whole city making it a super convenient place to stay in Lisbon.

Belém – Best for Naval History and Waterfront Sightseeing

The lovely district of Belém borders the Tagus River to the east of central Lisbon. Although it is set outside the main city, it is definitely worth a visit. Even if you don’t stay in Belem you shouldn’t miss this district off your Lisbon itinerary.

The biggest, and most famous, attraction is the Jerónimos Monastery. This bright, gothic-style building can be toured, but seeing it from the outside is impressive enough. Opposite the Monastery, across the verdant gardens of Praça do Império (Empire Square) sits the looming Padrão dos Descobrimentos. This Monument of Discoveries overlooks the River Tejo and is dedicated to the Portuguese explorers of old.

Another nearby landmark, set almost in the river, is the Belém Tower which has stood as a port fixture for over 500 years. The district of Belém is also filled with green parks and botanical gardens where you can escape from the rush of the city for an afternoon.

Belem is connected to the centre of Lisbon by trains, buses and modern trams. The train from Cais de Sodre takes only 8 minutes. It’s a wonderful, peaceful place to explore with plenty to do and is my favourite one of the best places to stay in Lisbon.

Cascais & Estoril – Best for the Beaches

If you are wondering where to stay in Lisbon to enjoy the beaches as well as the historic sights then consider staying in Cascais and Estoril. While Lisbon has an expansive waterfront, the seaside beaches are found outside the main city making Cascais and Estoril the best places to stay near the beaches.

Cascais and Estoril are two nearby seaside towns that are accessed by train via Cais do Sodré station. Both have lovely historic centers that can be explored, but their main attractions are the long, sandy Atlantic coastlines.

The main beaches of Estoril are Tamariz and Poça, but these are relatively small and can get crowded in the summer. Cascais has longer beaches that stretch north, away from Lisbon, for miles and miles.

Portugal is one of the best places to surf in Europe and you can combine surfing with sightseeing in Lisbon and visiting the fairy tale castles at Sintra when you stay in Cascais. The Atlantic Ocean is a lot colder than the Mediterranean, but it is a perfect temperature to escape the summer heat.

The Best Places to Stay in Cascais & Estoril

Westlight Cascais Chalet – For a place on the beach

Situated almost directly on one of Cascais’ small beaches, the Westlight Cascais Chalet is a great base for anyone who wants to swim, fish, or dive in the Atlantic. The rooms here are airy and light, and sea-facing rooms enjoy a perfect sunrise each morning.

There is a sun terrace and garden for guests to use, but there is no swimming pool due to the hotel’s proximity to the water. A continental breakfast is available each morning, but meals must be had at one of the many nearby cafés and restaurants. The hotel offers a car rental service and a paid shuttle is available to transport guests to and from Lisbon’s airport.

Essential Lisbon Travel Tips

Now that you’ve found the perfect place to stay in Lisbon finish planning your perfect Lisbon trip with these other essential Lisbon travel tips.

Best time to visit Lisbon

Lisbon’s pleasant climate and vibrant city life make it a great city to visit all year round but, in my opinion, the best time to visit Lisbon is from May – September.

In the busy summer months, you may find the temperatures climbing to 28°C (82°F) as the nearby Atlantic Ocean rises to 20°C (68°F). Summer also brings with it many exciting events and festivals, like the Lisbon Festivities, which celebrates the month of Patron Saints in June, and the Rock In Rio Lisboa rock concert, the NOS Alive art and musical festival, and the Jazz em Agosto jazz festival.

Traveling to Lisbon in the spring or autumn/fall tends to be cheaper, the weather is a milder 20°C (68°F) and there’s still plenty of things to do, away from the summer crowds. A visit to Lisbon in March would tempt you into the amazing Lisboa Fashion Week.

Or maybe go in April to see the brig lights of the IndieLisboa International Film Festival. You can also join in a guided tour of the old Roman and medieval sites of Lisbon during the European Heritage Day at the end of September.

A winter trip comes with all the joys of the various Lisbon Christmas markets and winter illuminations. Although the weather is cooler, it doesn’t necessarily get cold, with temperatures averaging 15°C (59°F).

Lisbon is great to visit any time of the year and there’s always something exciting to do, on top of the many historic landmarks and cultural sites scattered around the capital.

How many days to spend in Lisbon

Lisbon is a very easy place to visit as a lot of the main attractions and historic landmarks are within walking distance of each other. When deciding where to stay in Lisbon and putting together your Lisbon itinerary you also need to take into account how much time you have to spend in Lisbon.

If you are visiting to explore the historical and cultural gems of charming Portugal or to sample the Portuguese cuisine and join in the nightlife, then finding a place in downtown Lisbon is important. From your centrally located base, visiting everything on your list can be done in a long weekend, so spending three days and two nights in Lisbon would be ideal.

Anyone hoping to spend some time on the Atlantic beaches, learning to surf or taking the many day trips from Lisbon like to the UNESCO listed colourful castles at Sintra, will need to add more time to their visit.

Staying in Lisbon for five to seven days would give you enough time for sightseeing between relaxed beach days or surf lessons. I’d recommend booking accommodation in the city centre of Lisbon for three to five days, before finding a place in Cascais or Estoril for the rest of your trip.

How to get to Lisbon and get around

The easiest way to get to Lisbon is to fly directly to the convenient Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS), often just referred to as Lisbon airport, which is based in the city itself.

Although the airport is outside the central area, there is a metro station at the airport and trains and buses run between the airport and the downtown, providing 30-minute access to the entire capital. Some hotels even offer shuttle buses that pick up or drop off guests.

International train stations in Lisbon include Santa Apolonia and Gare do Oriente. If you’re arriving from somewhere else in Portugal, then you would probably arrive at one of these two stations as well, or the Sete Rios or Rossio train station.

Once you’re inside the capital, trains departing from Cais do Sodré will bring you along the Atlantic coast to Cascais and Estoril while Rossio train station offers convenient trains to Sintra. There is also a vast network of metro stations, trains, trams, and buses which provide easy transport to every Lisbon neighborhood.

The historic, iconic yellow Lisbon trams have become a popular tourist attraction so get pretty crowded but offer a fun and unique way to explore the city. The most famous tram is tram 28 which runs fromPraça Martim Moniz to Graça, Estrela and Campo de Ourique through many of the most interesting and historic parts of Lisbon.

It is also possible, of course, to drive to Lisbon. However, its position on the far west coast of Europe means that it may be a long drive with stops in France or Spain along the way. If you’re thinking of taking a Spain and Portugal road trip check out the epic route we took here!

Is Lisbon cheap?

For a while Portugal was touted as one of the cheapest countries in Europe. But, while Lisbon is cheaper and much better value than many other Western European capitals, I wouldn’t say it is a cheap destination anymore, especially if you compare it to Eastern Europe, Asia and many other parts of the world.

But for Europe, Portugal still offers a distinctly different experience to that of neighbouring Spain. There aren’t so many big ticket attractions in Lisbon and many happy days can be spent on a budget by simply wandering the charming streets, using public transport like the famous trams, staying at hostels and budget hotels and eating in local cafes or shopping in local markets. However there’s not much of a street food or takeaway scene making cheap eats on the go harder to find. Check out this post out for more of the cost of things in Lisbon.

Where to Stay in Puerto Escondido: Best Beaches, Areas & Hotels (2023)

No longer a ‘hidden port’ as the name suggests, Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca is a surf mad beach town on the Pacific coast of Mexico that boasts legendary waves and epic sunsets while still retaining a blissfully laid back vibe, despite it’s growing popularity as one of Mexico’s very best surf destinations.

Puerto Escondido is one of my favorite destinations in Mexico and hands down one of the best beaches in Oaxaca. There’s a huge range of accommodation and hotels in Puerto Escondido to suit all budgets, but it’s quite a large, spread out town and not very walkable.

So it’s important to plan your trip and consider where to stay in Puerto Escondido carefully to get the most out of your time in this surf haven.

My Guide to Where to Stay in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, Mexico

To help you decide where to stay in Puerto Escondido I’ll describe the best beaches, neighborhoods, areas, and places to stay in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca in one handy blog post.

You might also want to check out out my full Puerto Escondido guide for more travel tips including how to get to Puerto Escondido, the best things to do, the best time to visit and much more.

About Puerto Escondido

Before you look for the best hotels in Puerto Escondido it’s useful to know a bit more about the town so you can decide where to stay in Puerto Escondido to suit your budget and preferences.

Puerto Escondido is located on the Pacific coast of Mexico, in the state of Oaxaca, south of Mexico City. It’s about a five-hour drive from Oaxaca City, the capital city of Oaxaca, or a 1 hour flights from Mexico City to Puerto Escondido airport.

While Puerto Escondido remains more off the beaten track as a tourist destination than places like Cancun and Tulum, the town is famous for surfing due to the legendary waves on Zicatela Beach known as the Mexican Pipeline.

So naturally one of the best things to do in Puerto Escondido is to take surf lessons, but did you know you can also swim in a bioluminescent lagoon and release a baby turtle into the sea or go whale or dolphin watching in Puerto Escondido!?

This surf town has so much more to offer and has also become popular with yogis, backpackers, digital nomads and anyone looking to relax on beautiful beaches, explore the surrounding natural beauty, amazing local cuisine and just soak up the laidback vibes of this authentic Mexican beach town.

Although it’s a small town its actually quite spread out and not super walkable. For example, to walk the 4 miles between Playa Carrizillio and La Punta takes over an hour in the hot Mexican heat! So it’s important to consider what you’d like to do while visiting Puerto Escondido and base yourself near the best beach, area or neighbourhood for you for the best experience.

In this blog post I’ll guide you through the best beaches and main areas and neighborhoods of Puerto Escondido so that you can find out what suits you best before booking your accommodation or hotel.

The Best Beaches, Neighborhoods and Areas to Stay in Puerto Escondido

Puerto Escondido can be split into four areas – The Town Center (Centro) and Playa Prinicpal, Rinconada and Playa Carrizalillo, Zicatela Beach and La Punta.

Whatever your budget and preferences you’ll find something to suit among the wide range of Puerto Escondido accommodation options.

Each beach and area offers a different vibe and is home to a wide range of hotels and accommodation options, from backpacker hostels and surf camps, to yoga retreats, boutique resorts and everything in between.

Refreshingly there’s not any big chain hotels or huge luxury resorts in Puerto Escondido yet which adds to the authentic charm.

The best beaches, neighborhoods and areas to stay in Puerto Escondido are:

Playa Carrizalillo – Best Beach for Calm Waves and Learning to Surf

Zicatela Beach – Best Beach for Epic Waves and Lively Nightlife

La Punta – Best Beach for Island Vibes and Laidback Lifestyle

Centro – Best Area for Easy Access to Everything and Budget Travelers

Centro and Playa Principal is a good central location for the bus station, airport and all the amenities of the town, shops, supermarkets, bars and restaurants. It makes a good base for budget travelers, digital nomads, expats or long stayers.

While the Playa Principal is popular with holidaying Mexican families and local fishermen the beach was a little dirty and it’s not the best beach in Puerto Escondido. If you want to stay near the beach and also close to town then it’s better to stay near Playa Carrizalillo.

In this post I’ll describe each area to stay in Puerto Escondido and give my recommendations for the best hotels and places to stay to make booking your perfect vacation that much easier.

The most beautiful beach and my favourite place to stay in Puerto Escondido is Playa Carrizalillo. From above, this blissful bay of turquoise water framed by palm trees is a view I could happily gaze at for hours.

Down the steps, the sandy beach is the safest and best place to swim, snorkel and to learn to surf in Puerto Escondido. There’s a smattering of rustic, laid back palapas (thatched beach bars) serving up fresh fish tacos and refreshing mojitos.

Carrizalillo beach is not far from the main downtown area but is only accessible via a steep set of stairs which adds to it’s secluded charm. The area above the beach, Rinconada and Bacocho, is still not too far from the airport, bus station and all the shops and restaurants in the town center.

Playa Angelito and Playa Manzanillo

For sheltered bays and calm waters you can also visit Playa Angelito and Playa Manzanillo nearby. These two neighboring bays are within walking distance from Centro and Playa Carrizalillo and home to shallow, clear water and a handful of beachside eateries.

Puerto Angelito beach and Manzanillo beach are the perfect beaches for relaxing, swimming and snorkeling. These are the best beaches in Puerto Escondido for families and anyone looking for a calm swimming spot.

Best Places to Stay in Rinconada (Near Playa Carrizalillo etc)

Playa Carrizalillo, Playa Angelito and Playa Manzanillo are all quite close together so if you stay in the Rinconada area you’ll be within walking distance to all the calm beaches as well as Centro.

Here’s my favorite hotels and places to stay in this area to suit all budgets:

Luxury: Villas Carrizalillo – Amazing Views!

The hands down best place to stay in Playa Carrizalillo has got to be the Villas Carrizalillo. These luxurious, fully equipped rooms, suites and villas offer spectacular views over the turquoise bay and private access to the beach.

Soak up the views from the comfort of a hammock or sun bed on the terrace or enjoy the beautiful swimming pool and tropical gardens. The restaurant here is another highlight. This is one of the most popular places to stay in Puerto Escondido so book well in advance to avoid disapointment!

Budget: Carri Surf Studio – Affordable Well Located Studios

There’s not so many budget hotels near Playa Carrizallio but these comfortable and well equipped studios have a nice rooftop patio and are situated in a super convenient central location in Rinconada.

Playa Bacocho – Best Beach for Turtle Conversation

Playa Bacocho is a wild and undeveloped beach located in the north end of Puerto Escondido town. It’s not great for swimming and doesn’t have many facilities. Instead its home to a turtle release center.

At sunset time you can participate in releasing baby sea turtles into the ocean which is a heart warming experience and one of my favorite things to do in Puerto Escondido.

The Bacocho neighborhood is a slightly away from the beach but a good area for digital nomads and expats looking to stay more long term.

The best resort in this area is Posada Real Puerto Escondido – a 4 star beach resort with 2 outdoor swimming pools, sports facilities and a private beach club. If you have a smaller budget Hotel Suites Villasol is a great choice.

Playa Zicatela – Best Beach for Epic Waves and Lively Nightlife

Famous for it’s huge waves and home to the legendary Mexican Pipeline, Zicatela is one of the very best places to surf in Mexico and one of the world’s best and most consistent beach breaks. The consistently huge (over 10 feet high!) world-class waves are only suitable for experienced surfers but it’s mesmerising to watch and international surfing competitions are also held here.

Playa Zicatela is a long stretch of wide sandy beach and crashing waves lined with lively beach bars, restaurants and surf shops. It’s the best place to stay in Puerto Escondido for experienced surfers and for those who like to be close to the most happening nightlife.

While you can swim at other beaches in Puerto Escondido, Zicatela beach is not safe for swimming or learning to surf due to strong currents and huge waves. It’s perfect for sunbathing. watching the surfers conquer the waves and enjoying cocktails from one of the beach clubs, plus the sunsets are as epic as the waves.

Where to Stay in Zicatela

Playa Zicatela is one of the best areas to stay in Puerto Escondido for experienced surfers and those looking to be close to the lively nightlife. There’s a huge choice of accommodations to suit all budgets from surf hostels to more upmarket beach resorts as well as many beach clubs, bars and beachfront restaurants.

Here’s my top picks for where to stay in Zicatela:

Luxury: Casa Joseph Zicatela – Stunning Beachfront Resort

This stunning 5 star adults only beachfront resort is the best place to stay in Zicatela boasting seaview rooms – some of which even have private pools.

Mid Range: Selina – Social and Chic

The Puerto Escondido branch of Selina (the most popular co-living company) is the best place to stay in Puerto Escondido for digital nomads and anyone who wants a fun, chic stay in the heart of Zicatela.

Selina is just steps from the beach and offers a range of funky accommodation (I love the rustic A frame tepee tents!) around a leafy swimming pool area and a cafe and bar with a buzzing social scene.

Budget: La Playita Beach House – Best Value!

Located on the beach in a quiet area of Zicatela, these simple and comfortable whitewashed rooms around a swimming pool are amazing value. You’re still close to all the action but able to get a good nights sleep. There’s also a shared open kitchen you can use to cook your own meals to save money.

La Punta – Best Beach for Island Vibes and Laidback Lifestyle

Located at the far southern end of Zicatela is laidback La Punta which offers a more relaxed and bohemian atmosphere and smaller waves suitable for intermediate and beginner surfers.

The cove at the end is more suitable for swimming and learning to surf and theres some rustic beach bars with sun loungers making it a perfect spot for a relaxing day by the ocean.

Just behind the beach, the sandy lanes, palm trees, beach bars, vegan cafes, boutiques and yoga retreats give the area a mellow, tropical island vibe that makes it hard to leave.

Sunsets have a friendly community vibe with volleyball games on the beach and many long stayers walking their dogs and catching up. La Punta is becoming more and more popular with many new restaurants and bars popping up creating a low key nightlife scene.

Where to Stay in La Punta

La Punta is the best place to stay in Puerto Escondido for intermediate surfers or anyone looking for a slice of the laid back beach lifestyle with easy access to beach bars and surf breaks for beginners and intermediates.

Luxury: Casa Kuaa – Beachfront Luxury!

This newly built, modern and stylish hotel is my favorite place to stay in Puerto Escondido. Casa Kuaa sits right on the beach just steps from the bars and restaurants of La Punta. All rooms have balconies and sea views. You can jump from pool to ocean and soak up the spectacular sunsets right from your balcony or the beautiful swimming pool.

Mid-Range: Casa de Olas Boutique Hotel – Beautiful Boutique Hotel

Steps from the beach and right in the heart of the most happening area of La Punta (and possibly the coolest area of all of Puerto Escondido) Bikini Beach House offers comfortable accommodation at unbeatable value.

All rooms have rustic chic touches and a private balcony where you can soak up the tropical greenery outside. There’s also a cool cocktail and coffee bar downstairs complete with swings and colourful tropical flowers.

Playa Principal and Centro – Best Area for Easy Access to Everything and Budget Travelers

Located in the downtown Centro area of Puerto Escondido, Playa Principal is the town’s main beach and is a popular spot for locals and fishermen and home to some local seafood restaurants.

While it’s close to the Centro, or downtown area, and all the amenities of town the Playa Principal is usually filled with fishing boats so it isn’t the best or cleanest beach in Puerto Escondido for swimming.

It’s still a nice spot of people watching and for being in the middle of everything, so staying in this area is still a good choice for long stayers and budget travellers.

Mid Range: Casa Losodeli – Beautiful Coworking Resort

A beautiful and sociable tropical resort with apartments, private rooms and dormitories complete with pool, tropical gardens and coworking. Great for digital nomads who want to meet others and be close to town and the best beaches.

The Best Surf Camp in Puerto Escondido

As it’s home to some of the best surf spots in Mexico and understandably surfing is one of the best things to do in Puerto Escondido.

While the surf in Zicatela is not for beginners there’s still plenty of places to learn to surf in Puerto Escondido like Playa Carrizalillo and also La Punta on calmer days. It’s easy to find board rental and surf lessons all over town with the many surf schools.

If you’re serious about learning to surf and enjoy a fun, social atmosphere I’d recommend joining a surf camp where your accommodation, lessons and sometimes food are all provided in one package. Some surf schools also include other activities like yoga, Spanish lessons and excursions to the nearby Manialtepec lagoon where you can sometimes see bioluminescence.

Oasis Surf Camp, Puerto Escondido

My favourite surf camp in Puerto Escondido is Oasis Surf and Spanish School. The instructors make learning to surf easy, safe and fun, plus, learning some Spanish will really help you connect better with locals and make your travels in Mexico much easier. You’ll stay in one of their surf houses near Playa Carrizalillo, which have fully equipped apartments, a swimming pool, terrace and common area.

Best Yoga Retreat in Puerto Escondido

Where there are surfers, there is also yoga. The two make a great combination and are often combined into one perfect retreat helping to build strength and flexibility and soothing sore muscles.

Most surf camps offer yoga classes and there are some great yoga retreats in Puerto Escondido as well as some drop in yoga classes.

My favourite yoga retreat in Puerto Escondido is Barbarenas, located in a beautiful, sustainable and eco friendly chic setting in Zicatela. The gorgeous cabanas and yoga shala have mesmerising views over the ocean and the swimming pool is a tropical haven. The retreat package includes personalised yoga, meditation and pranayama sessions as well as delicious vegan food.

Tips for Planning Your Trip to Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca

Best Time to Visit Puerto Escondido

The best time to visit Puerto Escondido is between November and March in the cooler, dry season. This is also the best time to visit for beginner surfers and the peak season so it’s a good idea to book in advance if you plan to visit during this time as the best hotels get booked up.

The legendary waves get even bigger between May and August making it the best time to visit for experienced surfers that want a challenge but you may also experience some rain in this season as the rainy season is between June and October.

How to Get to Puerto Escondido and Get Around

Puerto Escondido may be a small town but it has an airport and the easiest way to get to Puerto Escondido is by flight from Mexico City.

Puerto Escondido’s airport makes it a great gateway to the Oaxaca Coast and Huatulco Airport (HUX) is another option which is about 63 miles away. There are cheap direct flights from Mexico City Airport (MEX) to Puerto Escondido Airport (PXM) that take about 1 hour which is the best option as the buses from Mexico City take about 19 hours!

There are also flights and buses from Oaxaca City or you can rent a car and drive in about 5 hours. The best bus route from Oaxaca City to Puerto Escondido is to take the ADO or OCC bus which travels overnight and takes about 11 hours. It’s a popular route so you should book your bus online in advance. If you suffer from motion sickness be aware that this route does involve traveling along windy mountain roads.

Puerto Escondido is quite spread out so give some thought to where you want to base yourself and how you will get around the town.

Uber is not available in Puerto Escondido yet but taxis are readily available and affordable for getting around town. A typical taxi ride within the town costs 30-35 pesos ($1.50-2) Most taxis don’t have meters so agree on a price before setting off.

Collectivos and camionetas are the main forms of local public transportation, running from sunrise to around 8:30 PM and costing 8 pesos (less than $0.50) per ride.

There are also buses connecting Puerto Escondido with the nearby towns like Pochutla but if you want to visit Mazunte and Zipolite you’ll have to get off half way and switch to a local collectivo.

Renting a car or motorbike is also a good option, especially if you want to have the freedom to explore the surrounding area and nearby attractions.

For more detailed info on what to do in Puerto Escondido, when to go and how to get there and get around check out my comprehensive Puerto Escondido Travel Guide.

So have you decided where to stay in Puerto Escondido yet!?

I hope this blog post has given you some useful information about the different beaches and areas and made it easier for you to decide where to stay in Puerto Escondido to suit your budget and personal preferences.

While I enjoyed exploring the unique charms of every area, my favorite areas in stay in Puerto Escondido are Playa Carrizallio and La Punta. My personal favorite place to stay is Villas Carrizillio – if you want great views and easy access to a calm beach, or Casa Kuaa, a beautiful boutique hotel right on the beachfront in trendy, bohemian La Punta.

Puerto Escondido was one of the highlights of my trip around Mexico City and Oaxaca but there’s so much more to see in the area. If you’re planning a longer trip around Oaxaca then check out my articles on Oaxaca City, the beaches of Mazunte and Zipolite, and my 2 week Mexico City, Beaches and Oaxaca route.

I also loved Mexico City, if you’re heading there then my Guide on the safest areas to stay in Mexico City is a must read!

My Experience Backpacking Mexico Solo in 2021

Hola from Mexico! There’s alot of confusion and controversy about traveling these days and I’ve had so many questions I thought it was about time I wrote about what it’s like backpacking Mexico solo in 2021.

Mexico is literally the only country that has been consistently open to travellers, tourists and backpackers of all nationalities during the coronavirus pandemic and also with no need to provide covid tests or quarantine!

No wonder Mexico has become the most popular travel destination of 2020 and 2021 and is full of people from all nationalities and all walks of life who want to take a much needed vacation in these challenging times or who just want to escape the lockdowns in their own country.

Due to the EU/UK – USA travel bans many people also find themselves in Mexico for 14 days as a way to get between these two continents or as a way to avoid expensive hotel quarantines.

I’ve been in Mexico since the start of May 2021 and thought it was about time I wrote a full post about what it’s like backpacking Mexico solo in 2021 as I know many people are curious to know what travel is like nowadays and there is alot of conflicting information in the media. Also keep in mind that what you might read in the news or the official rules can differ to what you might experience in real life.

What it’s like Backpacking Mexico Solo in 2021

(This post is written from my experience as a UK passport holder – rules and regulations differ for different nationalities and change frequently so check out the specific info for your nationality. Travel IS possible! My advice is to avoid speculation and scare mongering in the News and go straight to official government websites like www.gov.uk I also wouldn’t travel without travel insurance that covers for Covid. Mine is with SafetyWing as well as coronavirus they also cover me even if I am traveling against my governments advice.)

Backpacking Mexico Solo in 2021

Traveling to Mexico in 2021

Mexico is 2020 and 2021’s most popular destination and has some of the easiest entry requirements nowadays – no Covid test or quarantine is required from visitors/tourists of all nationalities and many nationalities get a whopping 180 days visa free on entry! See more Mexico visa info here  Also, Mexico has been pretty much consistently open during the pandemic unlike other countries who change their rules so often you can’t keep up!

You should be able to find flights to Mexico from most countries although the land borders are partially closed. There are direct flights with British Airways from the UK. I look on Skyscanner to check what flights are available but then check on the airlines website directly and the official government website or official tourism website for the country I’m traveling to to make sure they are running and to double check what the entry requirements are.

If it’s a connecting flight it’s also important to check that you will be allowed to transit through that country and what the requirements are which will depend on your nationality and which country you are traveling from. If your flight is on one ticket with the same airline all the way through you would be just transiting ‘airside’ which should be OK but if you have 2 separate tickets you be transiting ‘landside’ – you might need to collect your baggage, clear immigration and then check in for your next flight which may not be possible due to entry restrictions in some countries like the US. The best thing to do would be to call the airline and check you are allowed to travel on that route.

It’s also important to check what the requirements are for testing or quarantine to return back into your country and be aware that they may change at short notice. Here’s the page for the current advice on returning to the UK – www.gov.uk/uk-border-control

For me, I simply had to show a negative test (taken within the last 3 days) and that I’d filled out the passenger locator form online when checking into my flight and it only took a few minutes to go through the electronic gates when I landed. Then I stayed at home for 10 days and took 2 more tests. You can also pay for an additional test to release on day 5. They called me every day but didn’t visit and all the tests came back negative.

There are many places all around Mexico to get a covid test done easily, quickly and cheaply if you need one to return to your home country or for your onward travels including the airport where it costs 500 Pesos and takes 1 hour for the results so that shouldn’t be a problem. Most major airports around the world now offer this service.

Flying into Mexico in 2021

Traveling nowadays is more complicated than it used to be but, if you’ve gotten used to wearing a mask and got all the documents you need, then it’s bearable and can actually be quite pleasant and less stressful than in normal times.

Airports and planes are quieter and less crowded – all of the long haul flights I’ve taken recently I’ve had a whole row of 3 or 4 seats all to myself so I can stretch out and sleep. Domestic flights have been more crowded though. It’s takes less time to get through the airports, both times I’ve entered the UK during the pandemic immigration has only taken 10 minutes and apart from the phone calls, no-one actually came to my house to check I was isolating.

Remember that this is ‘the new normal’ for airport and airline staff – they’ve been doing this for over a year now and it’s their job to help you get to where you need to be safely and stress free. You just need to understand the rules and have the correct paperwork. If you don’t you could be denied boarding.

The changing rules and regulations (and the media) makes flying and traveling during the pandemic sound super stressful but as long as you have the necessary documents in order it’s actually less stressful than in normal times. (The thing that is the most stressful is trying to get your head around and keep up with the changing rules and u-turns from the UK government!)

I’ve taken many flights during the pandemic and I haven’t gotten sick – the airplane circulates the air and scientists have said that flying isn’t as risky as you might think and is no more risky than going to the supermarket. Check out this Harvard study on the risk of flying during covid.

Some flights I’ve been on are super packed and make you wear hazmat suits, visors and double masks (India) while some are much more laid back and just require 1 mask and leave the middle seat free and some flights are almost empty. Some flights are super cheap while some routes are more expensive than usual – kind of depends on supply and demand. Service, entertainment and food have mostly been great, although some airlines have reduced their food service.

Getting into Mexico in 2021

Mexico has probably the easiest immigration I’ve experienced in a long time and most nationalities get a whopping 180 days visa free on entry! They simply asked how long I was staying and why. I simply said tourism and told them the date I planned to leave.

You may require an onward ticket to enter Mexico but not always – when I was checking in for my flight to Mexico the airline (Air France) did ask to see my onward ticket and I don’t think they would have allowed me to board without one but immigration in Mexico didn’t ask to see proof. Not everyone gets asked for an onward ticket but it’s good to have one just in case. As I was unsure of my onward travel plans I rented an onward ticket to my home country from bestonwardticket.com which worked out great.

I also had to fill out this https://www.vuelaseguro.com/ an online health questionnaire to enter Mexico but immigration didn’t check this. The airline told us to fill out the health questionnaire and checked my onward ticket, proof of accommodation (I’d just booked an Air BnB for the first 3 days), reason for traveling and covid test but Mexican immigration were much more laid back. When you enter you will fill out a visitor permit (FMM) try not to lose this slip because you’ll need it for when you leave. If you do lose it, you might have a pay a small fine.

You don’t need a negative covid test to enter Mexico but the countries I was transiting through to get there did require it, although they also said that for transit the requirements of the destination country apply. I probably could have argued my way through stating that Mexico doesn’t require a covid test but wanted to be responsible and to have stress free travels so I had one anyway but it was not scrutinised.

Covid Restrictions in Mexico in 2021

Mexico currently has pretty low cases of Coronavirus but are still taking many precautions. The country has a covid traffic light system but in May 2021 no areas are Red and most things are open, but not all tourist attractions or museums. Some things say they are open on Google Maps but when I reached there they weren’t so it’s a good idea to double check that the places you want to see will be open.

Mexico is a noisy, crowded, colourful, vibrant country which is still full of life. In the big cities literally everyone is wearing a KN95 mask all the time, even when walking alone outside on the streets, the locals may look at you a bit suspicious if you are not wearing a mask outside but no-ones beating you up or fining you if you choose not to.

When you enter shops and restaurants you must wear a mask, you will walk through a sanitising mat, have your temperature checked and be given huge dollops of hand sanitizer and some places will also spray you down back and front with a sanitising spray.

On the beaches things are much more relaxed and you’ll hardly see a mask or sanitiser in sight apart from the restaurant staff. You can almost forget about covid and enjoy a much needed fun and relaxing beach holiday.

Getting around Mexico in 2021

Getting around Mexico is easy. Mexico City airport is surprisingly busy with affordable domestic flights all over this vast and diverse country. There is also a network of comfortable buses, Uber’s, taxis, and collectivos all operating a full schedule you just need to wear a mask when traveling. You can also rent a car or a campervan and travel around Mexico and stay in campsites – I wish I’d known that was possible. Next time!

Hotels, hostels, Air BnBs, campsites, beaches, ruins, restaurants, shops and supermarkets are generally all fully open and welcoming tourists of all nationalities while taking precautions. So, while you might be disappointed that a few places you might have wanted to go are closed, most things are open and you’ll find plenty to keep you entertained and having a good time in Mexico – as long as you don’t mind wearing a mask while doing most of it!

Just some attractions, especially indoors ones like museums and galleries are closed. Some attractions are partially open, like the mighty and mysterious pyramids at Teotihuacan – they are open but you need to wear a mask and cannot climb up the pyramids, and Frida Khalo’s house and museum is open but with limited capacity and only if you book your ticket and timeslot online in advance and adhere to a long list of covid precautions and a one way system.

Solo female travel in Mexico in 2021

I felt pretty safe as a solo female traveller backpacking Mexico solo in 2021. I’d heard horror stories about safety in Mexico City and I did worry a little in the first place I stayed (East of the Centro Historico) at night. Everything was eerily shuttered up and the streets were deserted apart from the massive police presence so I didn’t go out alone after dark. During the day time the streets bustled with people shopping and I didn’t have any problems.

It feels much like any city in the world – there are good areas and rougher areas of every city, as long as you are not involved with drugs and gangs or flash expensive stuff or look vulnerable/drunk, just do some research and stick to the good areas and you should be fine. The Centro Historical was nice for a few days to see the historical, colonial architecture and sights but I preferred the areas of Roma, La Condesa, Coyoacan and Polanco with their wider, leafy streets, chic cafes, nightlife and lovely parks with doggy day care facilities which all felt very safe and I felt safe to go out alone at night. Read more here about the best areas and neighbourhoods to stay in Mexico City.

As a solo woman I felt very safe in Mexico – it didn’t matter what, or how less, I wore I never got any hassle or creepy vibes from men – even on the nudist beach! It was so refreshing after so long in India. Even people trying to sell you things on the beaches or around tourist site were low hassle and left you alone after a polite ‘no, gracias.’ Here’s another good article about solo female safety in Mexico and the best places to visit for solo female travellers.

Regarding Covid – I also felt pretty safe.

The Mexicans are taking every precaution, it’s easy to get tested, there are alot of healthcare options here and my travel insurance with SafetyWing covers Covid.

Being in narrow streets with big crowds of people in masks in Mexico City did make me feel a little anxious though, probably mainly as it’s not what I’m used to, and the precautions like having temperature guns to your head made me feel uncomfortable too, but at the same time it’s also reassuring that they are taking it very seriously and the cases are very low in Mexico now.

I didn’t worry too much about getting sick when I was on the beaches or outside in fresh, warm, sunny air but at first I did feel a little anxious when staying in hostels, taking buses, riding the metro and going to bars and parties with travellers from all other the world. I did worry a bit about getting sick when being around so many new people and what I would do if I was sick as I was traveling alone.

In the hostels, some people wear masks all the time, some give you lots of space and are cautious, others aren’t worried at all and just act like normal while some think it’s all a scam. Whatever you believe you will find your tribe.

I feel it’s important to choose accommodation with plenty of ventilation, space and good cleanliness reviews and it’s kind of up to you to protect yourself how you feel is best when you’re socialising with other guests.

I worried how I could keep a physical distance from people while still being sociable and making friends so that I wasn’t alone all the time. I think that’s the dilemma for a solo traveller these days – how do you protect yourself and others without being lonely? If you get sick who would help you and how could you isolate yourself to protect others and still manage to eat?

Renting an apartment or Air BnB makes distancing or isolating easier and you can order groceries, takeaway food, medicines and everything online in Mexico City but this also means you’d likely be lonely as a solo traveller. This anxiety did make it more awkward than normal to make friends while traveling alone and the masks make it more difficult to communicate – especially with limited Spanish skills.

I guess your experience will depend on your levels of anxiety and your risk factors. I’m a bit of a worrier but I knew that in the worst case scenario if I got badly sick I had insurance to cover it and, in touristy areas at least, would be able to find an English speaking expat hospital. I haven’t been vaccinated but I haven’t had so much as a sniffle, I’ve had antibody tests and it seems I’ve just not been exposed despite all this traveling and mingling.

Other travellers and the general vibe

Everyone is in Mexico! Many digital nomads, long term travellers and expats have made a base in Mexico and as most countries in the world are closed many backpackers and all kinds of tourists are here backpacking Mexico solo in 2021 giving some places a Thailand like vibe.

Many North American’s are vacationing in Yucatan and the Cancun area and there are also people from all over the world just hanging out in Mexico waiting for the world to change, to escape the lockdowns or hotel quarantines or travel bans in their own countries or using 14 days in Mexico as a stepping stone to being allowed entry somewhere else for example UK citizens wanting to visit the USA.

In some places it can be hard to find a cheap room as Mexico has become the most popular travel and backpacking destination of 2021 so it’s a good idea to book your travel and rooms in advance. But the good thing about this is that if you are backpacking Mexico solo in 2021 don’t worry you won’t be lonely you will find plenty of people to make friends with in the hostels and bars or by using online groups and apps. People from all over the world are hanging out in Mexico City, Tulum, Oaxaca, Puerto Escondido, Mazunte and Zipolite, Sayulita, San Cristobal de la Casas and Palenque.

The Mexicans are friendly, welcoming and helpful although English is not widely spoken here. I struggled as I don’t speak any Spanish and when everyone’s in masks it makes it can be even harder to communicate but I still managed to get around and get what I needed thanks to Google translate and the patience, tolerance and helpfulness of the Mexican’s. ‘Bus Oaxaca por favor?!’

Mexico is a huge, diverse and exciting country. It’s too big to see it all in a couple of weeks so I’d recommend concentrating on one region. I spent a month in Mexico City and traveling around the Oaxaca region which gave me a great taste of Mexico.

I’d also highly recommend learning some Spanish! Hardly anyone outside the hotels and tourist restaurants speaks English, and even in some of the hostels and hotels I stayed in often the staff didn’t speak English. You can enrol in a language school in Mexico or learn online – it will make your travels here much easier and your interactions with the locals much more fulfilling.

So should you go backpacking Mexico solo in 2021?

That’s a question only you can answer for yourself, I just wanted to share my experience backpacking Mexico solo in 2021 and provide a balanced, honest account to combat the negativity, fear and confusion surrounding travel these days, and on the flip side, the drool worthy, perfect instagram shots that don’t show the whole reality.

In all honesty, a pandemic is not the best time to be backpacking alone, while there are many people doing it and you will meet people here, worrying about getting sick alone can add an extra worry and I would have had a much better experience with a travel buddy. Also, some things may be closed, rules can change quickly and it can be stressful trying to keep up to date with them.

So the question whether to travel to Mexico in 2021 depends on your anxiety levels, your risk factors and the rules of your home country to whether they will allow you to leave and return.

There’s a lot of confusion and controversy about traveling these days, but it’s not impossible, and Mexico is one of the easiest places to travel right now and everyone’s welcome!

Thank you Mexico for having me!

Tips for Choosing a Yoga Teacher Training Course in Europe

There are YTTCs held in nearly every country in Europe and they all offer a unique and beautiful experience but Spain has double the amount of yoga teacher training courses in Europe than any other country.

The best countries for a YTTC in Europe are Spain, Portugal, Greece, Italy and France. These countries all offer good weather, stunning beaches, fascinating history, delicious food and a wide range of excellent yoga teacher training courses that will take your practice to the next level and allow you to become a registered yoga teacher.

Doing any yoga teacher training course is a big investment of your finances and time so make sure to do your research before you book to ensure that the course and style of yoga taught is suitable for what you wish to teach in the future.

I’d also recommend considering the course with the longest duration you can as you’ll have more time to absorb all the information you’re learning, relax those sore muscles and explore the location.

Always make sure your YTT is Yoga Alliance approved. While most schools have a similar curriculum, quality can vary a lot and its more important than ever to get reviews from previous students before you book your yoga teacher training in Europe.

I find sites like www.bookyogaretreats.com and www.bookyogateachertraining.com really useful as you can read reviews from previous students as well as getting all the information you need about the style of yoga, instructors and daily schedule.
